Introduction

You cleared Prelims last year with a good score, waited for Mains, and then ran out of time in General Awareness. This happens to thousands of aspirants every year. The reason is not ability, it is late preparation and a wrong understanding of the syllabus.

IBPS Clerk Syllabus 2026 is now confirmed through CRP CSA XVI. The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection released the notification on 01 August 2026 on ibps.in. Registration is open from 01 to 21 August 2026. Prelims will be held in October 2026 (around 10 and 11 October) and Mains is fixed for 27 December 2026. The biggest update this year is in Mains. The total questions have risen from 155 to 160 and total time from 120 to 125 minutes, with Quantitative Aptitude now carrying 40 questions for 50 marks in 35 minutes.

IBPS Clerk Syllabus 2026: Highlights

IBPS Clerk is now officially called Customer Service Associate (CSA) under Common Recruitment Process CSA XVI, but the exam remains a clerical level post with two online stages. No interview is conducted.

Key points to remember from the official structure:

• Both Prelims and Mains are objective and online. Medium is English and Hindi (and regional options by State or UT as per notification), except English Language which is English only. The English version prevails if there is any difference in translation.
• You must clear both sectional and overall cut offs in Prelims to be shortlisted for Mains, and again in Mains to be considered for provisional allotment. State wise and category wise cut offs apply.
• Prelims marks are not counted for final merit. Only Mains marks (converted out of 100 for allotment) decide the merit list, subject to qualifying the Local Language Proficiency Test (LLPT) after Mains or before joining.

IBPS Clerk Prelims Pattern and Syllabus

Prelims is a speed and accuracy test. You get 60 minutes for 100 questions. Each section has a separate 20 minute timer. Once time for a section ends, you move to the next automatically and cannot return.

Prelims Exam Pattern 2026

• Each question carries 1 mark in Prelims.
• You must qualify in each of the three tests by securing cut off marks decided by IBPS. Adequate numbers per category will be shortlisted for Mains.
• Prelims is only for shortlisting. Even a high score does not add to final selection.

Prelims Syllabus Subject Wise

IBPS does not publish a chapter wise lengthy syllabus PDF, but the scope for each subject is well defined through the notification structure and previous years. Here is the subject wise topic list you should prepare:

English Language (30 Q)

This section tests reading and basic grammar in context, not isolated rules:

• Reading Comprehension (including inference based questions)
• Cloze Test
• Error Detection and Sentence Correction
• Fill in the Blanks and Double Fillers

• Phrase Replacement
• Word Usage, Vocabulary in context, Synonyms and Antonyms, Idioms and Phrases

Numerical Ability (35 Q)

In Prelims this section is calculation heavy and moderate on concepts:

• Arithmetic: Percentage, Ratio and Proportion, Average, Profit and Loss and Discount, Simple and Compound Interest, Time and Work, Pipes and Cisterns, Time Speed and Distance, Mixture and Alligation, Partnership

Reasoning Ability (35 Q)

This section checks logic and arrangement skills:

• Puzzles: Floor or box based, day or month scheduling, designation, comparison, distribution and mixed variable puzzles
• Seating Arrangements: Linear, circular, square, rectangular and parallel rows, facing inside or outside, uncertain number of persons
• Inequality (direct)
• Syllogism
• Alphanumeric and Alphabet Series, Order and Ranking, Direction Sense, Blood Relations
• Coding Decoding, Input Output basics

Tip: In Prelims, puzzles and seating arrangements together usually carry the highest weight (about 15 or more questions). Data Interpretation and Simplification dominate Numerical Ability. In English, Reading Comprehension plus Cloze Test together often cover about one third of the section.

IBPS Clerk Mains Revised Pattern 2026

This is the most searched update for IBPS Clerk Syllabus 2026, and the notification confirms the revised Mains structure clearly.

Mains Exam Pattern: Sectional Split

Key features of the revised pattern:

• Total questions 160, total marks 200, total duration 125 minutes with sectional timing.
• Reasoning Ability carries the highest value at 60 marks for 40 questions, so some questions carry more than 1 mark. General or Financial Awareness gives 50 marks in just 20 minutes, making it the highest speed scoring section.
• The sequence of sections in the actual exam may vary, but time for each section is fixed.

What Actually Changed This Year

Many websites still show the old pattern of 155 questions in 120 minutes. The CRP CSA XVI notification has revised it:

In simple words, IBPS has added both questions and time to Quantitative Aptitude. The per question time for Quant remains around 52.5 seconds on average, but you now face five additional questions without a proportional jump in marks. This makes accuracy more important than blind attempts, especially because the overall Mains duration has increased by only five minutes for five questions.

IBPS Clerk Mains Syllabus Subject Wise

Mains syllabus overlaps with Prelims, but the level is deeper and more analytical. Only one subject is completely new: General or Financial Awareness. The other three are advanced versions of what you prepared for Prelims.

General English (40 Q, 40 Marks, 35 Minutes)

Mains English expects better comprehension and contextual grammar than Prelims:

• Reading Comprehension with inference, tone, and vocabulary in context
• Cloze Test, Cloze with filler, Double Fillers
• Error Detection, Sentence Correction and Improvement
• Para Jumbles, Para Completion, Sentence Connectors
• Word Swap, Word Usage, Collocation
• Vocabulary in context, Idioms and Phrases, Synonyms and Antonyms (context based)
• Grammar fundamentals: Parts of speech, Subject verb agreement, Tenses, Articles, Prepositions, Conjunctions, Modifiers, Voice and Narration, Parallelism

Preparation focus: read one detailed editorial daily with focus on how arguments are built. Do not memorise word lists in isolation. Learn words inside sentences and revise them with context.

Quantitative Aptitude (40 Q, 50 Marks, 35 Minutes) Revised

This is the revised section. Expect longer and multi concept questions:

• Calculation: Simplification, Approximation, Number Series, Quadratic Equations
• Arithmetic: Percentage, Ratio and Proportion, Average, Profit and Loss, Simple and Compound Interest, Partnership, Mixture and Alligation
• Work and Efficiency: Time and Work, Wages, Pipes and Cisterns
• Speed: Speed Time Distance, Trains, Boats and Streams
• Measurement: Mensuration (area, volume, surface area)
• Data Analysis: Table, Bar, Line, Pie, Caselet, Mixed, Missing and Arithmetic based DI
• Analytical Maths: Data Sufficiency, Quantity Comparison, Quantity based comparisons

Data Interpretation will dominate the revised Quant section. About 40 to 50 percent of questions in Mains often come from DI sets that combine arithmetic concepts. Practise caselet, missing and mixed DI with arithmetic linking.

Reasoning Ability (40 Q, 60 Marks, 35 Minutes)

Reasoning is merged with Computer Aptitude in the official label, but the notification table lists it as Reasoning Ability for 40 questions. Computer concepts are tested inside this section:

• Advanced Puzzles: Floor and box with multiple variables, scheduling, designation, distribution, comparison and circular arrangements with extra parameters
• Seating Arrangements: Linear, circular, square, rectangular, parallel rows, uncertain arrangements
• Logical Reasoning: Inequality (direct and coded), Syllogism, Input Output
• Analytical: Data Sufficiency, Blood Relations, Direction Sense, Order and Ranking, Coding Decoding, Alphanumeric Series

Tip: Computer questions are factual and scoring. A daily 20 minute review can fetch sure marks without the time cost of a heavy puzzle.

General or Financial Awareness (40 Q, 50 Marks, 20 Minutes)

This is the only section where revision beats intelligence. It covers:

• Current Affairs: National and international events, Government schemes and programmes, Important appointments (government, banking, regulators), Awards and honours, Sports tournaments and records, Books and authors, Reports and indices, Days and themes
• Static linked to Current Affairs: Capitals, currencies, headquarters of financial bodies
• Banking and Financial Awareness: Banking structure (Public, Private, Cooperative, Small Finance Banks), RBI functions, regulation and monetary policy, Repo rate, CRR, SLR, MSF, Inflation, Economic Survey, Union Budget highlights, Financial institutions and regulators, Banking abbreviations and products, Government welfare, financial and development schemes, Science and technology linked to economy or banking

You get 20 minutes for 40 questions, which is just 30 seconds per question. There is no calculation. If you know it, you score. If you prepared it late, you lose. That is why starting from August itself matters. Mains is on 27 December, but the window for this section is the last six months before the exam, plus budget and economic updates.

Negative Marking, Cut Off and Merit

Many candidates ignore marking rules until a mock shows a 10 mark drop due to guessing.

Negative Marking in Both Stages

• As per the notification, for each question where a wrong answer has been given, one fourth or 0.25 of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted as penalty.
• If a question is left blank, that is no answer is marked, there is no penalty for that question.
• The penalty is proportional to marks assigned. For example, in Reasoning which has 60 marks for 40 questions, average weightage is more than 1 mark, so wrong answers there cost more than in English which has 40 marks for 40 questions. In Prelims, every question is 1 mark, so penalty is exactly 0.25 per wrong answer.

Example: If you attempt 35 questions in Prelims English, get 25 correct and 10 wrong, with 1 mark each, your score is 25 minus (10 multiplied by 0.25) equal to 22.5, not 25. Over three sections, blind guessing can cost 5 to 8 marks easily.

Sectional and Overall Cut Off

• You must obtain a minimum score in each test of Mains and also a minimum total score to be considered for provisional allotment.
• Cut offs are decided by IBPS based on State or UT wise vacancies. A score high enough in one State may not be enough in another.
• Scores in different sessions, if held, are normalised using equi percentile method. Scores up to two decimals are used for calculations.

Final Merit and Provisional Allotment

• Marks obtained in the Online Main Examination only will be considered for final merit listing. The notification states this explicitly.
• Mains marks out of 200 will be converted out of 100 for provisional allotment. Merit cum preference and reservation guidelines are followed.
• There is no interview for IBPS Clerk. Selection flow is: Prelims qualifying then Mains scoring then LLPT qualifying then document verification and provisional allotment.
• A reserve list of about 30 percent of vacancies may be kept, valid for one year from allotment date. If a bank reports more vacancies later, allotment from reserve list may happen in batches.

Remember, if two candidates score equal marks in Mains, seniority in age decides merit order. The older candidate is placed higher.

High Weightage Topics to Prioritise

Not all chapters carry equal value. Based on recent IBPS Clerk trend analysis covering Prelims and Mains, prioritise as below. This list avoids the unrealistic idea that any one chapter alone guarantees selection. It is about weightage and return on time.

Reasoning Ability

• Puzzles and Seating Arrangements (highest weight, both Prelims and Mains): Floor, box, scheduling, designation and mixed puzzles. Start with direct information, then handle indirect conditions. Practise at least one full set daily with a timer.
• Syllogism and Inequality: Shorter, high accuracy topics. Ideal for securing sectional cut off quickly.
• Coding Decoding, Direction and Blood Relations: Frequently asked, moderate time.
• Input Output and Data Sufficiency: More important in Mains. Learn the pattern logic step by step before speeding up.

Quantitative Aptitude and Numerical Ability

• Simplification and Approximation: 10 to 15 questions in Prelims, fastest scoring area. Master BODMAS, tables up to 30, squares and cubes, and percentage to fraction conversions.
• Data Interpretation: Tables, Bar, Line, Pie, Caselet and Arithmetic based DI. In Mains, DI sets integrate arithmetic like profit loss or ratio. Practise analysing data before calculating.
• Arithmetic Word Problems: Percentage, Ratio, Average, Profit and Loss, Simple and Compound Interest, Time and Work, Speed Time Distance, Mixture and Alligation. These link directly to DI in Mains.
• Number Series and Quadratic Equations: Quick marks if pattern recognition is strong. Practise 10 questions daily.

English Language

• Reading Comprehension: 7 to 10 questions in Prelims, even more analytical in Mains. Read questions first to scan, then read the passage for inference and tone.
• Cloze Test and Fillers: Very high frequency. Vocabulary in context matters more than isolated meanings.
• Error Detection and Phrase Replacement: Tests understanding of grammar inside sentences. Cover subject verb agreement, tenses, articles, prepositions and conjunctions systematically.
• Para Jumbles and Sentence Connectors: Look for linker words like however, moreover, therefore and subject continuity.

General or Financial Awareness and Computer Aptitude

• Banking Awareness plus Current Affairs of last six months: RBI policy including repo rate, CRR, SLR, Budget, Economic Survey highlights, financial institutions, government schemes, reports and appointments. This section decides rank because most candidates skip daily revision.
• Computer Aptitude scoring topics: Internet and networking, MS Office commands, Hardware and Software, Operating Systems, Cybersecurity and Digital Banking terms like UPI, NEFT, RTGS, IMPS. These are factual, less time taking and can add 8 to 10 safe marks.

While everyone focuses on aptitude, smart aspirants know selection in IBPS Clerk happens in General Awareness and English, where others prepare poorly. Your quant score will be similar to thousands of others. Your awareness and English score decides if you move up the merit list where every mark matters.

Integrated Preparation Strategy

Mains is on 27 December 2026, about two and a half months after Prelims on 10 and 11 October. If you start Mains preparation after the Prelims result in November, you will have less than six weeks for General Awareness, advanced DI and computer concepts. That is why toppers prepare Prelims and Mains together from August itself.

How to Balance Both Stages

August to October Plan before Prelims

• Foundation 60 percent Prelims, 25 percent Mains, 15 percent Awareness: Learn simplification, number series, inequality, syllogism, basic puzzles, subject verb agreement and tenses. Start daily current affairs notes and revise weekly. Do not ignore computer fundamentals.
• Practice with sectional timing: From September, solve mocks with strict 20 minutes per section. Analyse errors for accuracy, not just attempts. Guard against the 0.25 penalty by leaving doubtful questions where no option can be eliminated.
• Monthly GA compilation: At the end of each month from August, create a crisp 10 page summary for revision. Use a fixed structure: National news, Banking and RBI, Government schemes, Awards and appointments, Sports, Reports and budget items.

October to December Plan after Prelims

• Shift to Mains specific depth: Advanced puzzles, input output, data sufficiency, caselet and missing DI, arithmetic heavy DI, financial awareness with budget and economic survey.
• Continue daily 30 minutes of current affairs revision. Solve one full Mains mock weekly with 125 minute simulation and full analysis. Track accuracy per section, not just total score.

Practical Time Division

• Full time aspirants: 60 minutes Quant, 60 minutes Reasoning, 45 minutes English, 30 minutes General Awareness, 20 minutes Computer on alternate days, 60 minutes sectional or full mock and analysis.
• Working aspirants: Weekdays 45 to 60 minutes Quant or Reasoning in morning, 20 minutes current affairs during breaks, 60 minutes English or Computer at night, 15 minutes error note revision. Weekends for one full mock and weekly GA review.

Three habits that reduce negative marking most effectively are: attempt only after eliminating at least one option, never mark the same guess pattern across sections, and revisit flagged questions only if time was saved from easy topics like simplification or current affairs.
