Is Typing Test Compulsory?

Yes. The ssc chsl typing test is compulsory for all shortlisted candidates. It is qualifying, but not optional.

Half Mistakes

• Extra space, missing space, or double space between words

• Swapping order of two words

SSC uses this logic:

Gross words equal total key strokes divided by 5. Then subtract full mistakes and half of half mistakes to get net words. Then divide by minutes to get net WPM.

Example: You type 1900 key strokes in 10 minutes. Gross words equal 380. You have 10 full and 6 half mistakes. Deduction equals 13. Net words equal 367. Net speed equals 36.7 WPM. This clears 35 WPM for LDC English if your error percent is also inside the limit.

Category Wise Error Limits

SSC fixes a maximum error percent each year. If your errors cross it, you fail even with good speed.

• LDC, JSA typing test: About 10 percent errors allowed for most categories including UR, SC, ST, OBC and EWS. About 7 percent for PwD Others category. Earlier cycles used 7 percent for UR and 10 percent for reserved categories, so keep 7 percent as your safe target.

Week 1: Accuracy Base

Goal is 25 WPM English or 22 WPM Hindi with 98 percent accuracy.

• Learn touch typing. Fingers on home row, eyes on screen, thumbs for space.
• Type 5 minute passages at slow speed. Stop if accuracy falls below 95 percent.
• Drill capitals, commas, full stops, hyphens and numbers daily.

Week 2: Speed Push

Goal is 30 WPM English or 26 WPM Hindi with 96 percent accuracy.

SSC holds the test on computers provided at the centre. You cannot bring your own keyboard. A short trial or warm up of 2 to 3 minutes is usually given. Use it to check spacebar, Shift, Tab and backspace.

Follow these official style rules that decide full and half mistakes:

1. Type words, figures and years exactly as printed. Do not change spellings.
2. Type only in the medium you chose. Typing in another language gets zero credit.
3. Use Tab to start a paragraph. Spaces instead of Tab count as half mistake.
4. Use one space after comma, full stop and question mark, as shown in the paper.
5. You can revise inside time. No need to retype full passage if you finish early. Keep typing till time ends.
6. Do not type irrelevant matter or numbers. They count as mistakes.
