The SSC CPO exam pattern in 2026 includes two computer based papers with sectional timers, physical tests between the papers, and a medical test at the end. The SSC CPO Paper 1 tests four subjects for 100 marks and the SSC CPO Paper 2 tests four parts for 320 marks with heavy focus on English.
Paper 1 Pattern
The SSC CPO Paper 1 is the screening test. Only candidates who clear the SSC CPO Paper 1 cutoff move to PET and PST.

Key rules for SSC CPO Paper 1:
- Mode is Computer Based Test with objective multiple choice questions.
- Each correct answer gives 1 mark. Each wrong answer cuts 0.25 marks.
- Questions in Parts I, II and III are set in both Hindi and English. Part IV is in English only.
- You cannot move extra time from one part to another. The timer locks each part after 15 minutes.
- Marks are normalised if the SSC CPO exam is held in multiple shifts.
Paper 2 Pattern
The SSC CPO Paper 2 is held only for candidates who qualify in PET and PST. The SSC CPO Paper 2 total marks are 320. English alone carries 200 marks in SSC CPO Paper 2, so English decides the final merit to a large extent.

Key rules for SSC CPO Paper 2:
- Each question in Parts I, II and III carries 2 marks. Each English question in Part IV also carries 2 marks.
- Each wrong answer in SSC CPO Paper 2 cuts 0.50 marks. This penalty is double the Paper 1 penalty, so blind guessing is risky.
- The notice states that Paper 2 difficulty will be higher than Paper 1 difficulty.
- Questions in Parts I, II and III are set in Hindi and English.
Warning: Many websites still show the old SSC CPO pattern of 200 questions for 200 marks in each paper with 2 hours time. That old pattern does not apply to SSC CPO 2026. Follow the 100 marks and 320 marks tables above from the notification dated 10.09.2026.
How Selection Works

Minimum Qualifying Marks
Candidates must score minimum qualifying marks in SSC CPO Paper 1 and Paper 2 without adding NCC bonus marks. The SSC CPO qualifying marks are fixed category wise.

SSC can fix higher cutoff marks in each part of Paper 1 based on vacancies and number of candidates. Clearing the minimum percentage alone does not guarantee selection for PET and PST.
NCC Bonus Marks
NCC certificate holders get bonus marks in SSC CPO Paper 1 and Paper 2. The bonus is added to normalised scores.

Final Merit Logic
The SSC CPO 2026 notice states that final selection and post allocation will be made on the basis of performance in SSC CPO Paper 2 (including NCC bonus) and the preference of posts and forces filled by candidates. PET, PST and medical tests are qualifying in nature. Ex-Servicemen do not need to appear in PET, but they must pass PST, written papers and medical standards.

If you are preparing for both exams, your reasoning, quant and GK base will help in both. But SSC CPO needs daily running practice and much stronger English, while SSC CGL needs deeper maths and computer awareness.
Is SSC CPO Tough?
Is SSC CPO tough. The SSC CPO written paper is moderate for a graduate, but the SSC CPO exam is tough because of three filters together: sectional timers, physical tests and English heavy Paper 2.
Three reasons candidates find SSC CPO tough:
- Time pressure is real. You get only 15 minutes per part in Paper 1 and about 20 minutes per part in Paper 2. You cannot borrow time from an easy section.
- Physical tests remove many written toppers. Male candidates must run 1.6 km in 6.5 minutes and clear jumps and shot put. Female candidates must run 800 metres in 4 minutes and clear jumps. Start physical training with Paper 1 preparation, not after the result.
- English decides merit. With 100 English questions for 200 marks in Paper 2 and 0.50 negative marking, weak grammar and slow reading pull the total down fast.
